Elmlodge Herefords is a unique family run Polled Hereford operation nestled in the rolling hills of Otonabee Township in Peterborough County. Smack dab in the middle of Ontario we are just 2 hours from the Toronto International Airport and 3 hours from Ottawa, the Nation's Capital. The Elmhirsts have been in the purebred stock business since the Queen of England deeded 1000 acres in Canada to Philip Elmhirst, a Lieutenant in the British army, over 120 years ago. Today three generations of Elmhirsts are actively involved in the day to day operations that are required to manage 90 Polled Hereford cows and 40 Simmental cows. The Simmental cattle go under the Indian River Cattle Company banner and descend from Juanita’s family roots as Simmental breeders. It was in 1971 the first Hereford landed at Elmlodge after years of breeding Shorthorn cattle and Thoroughbred horses. The cows at Elmlodge are the sole source of income for the farm and are therefore scrutinized for the functional traits that create profit. The cowherd has been bred to be efficient, problem free, and profitable enough to put 4 Elmhirst children through University and help celebrate 4 weddings.
The pastures at Elmlodge are home to moderate, sound, attractive, and feminine females that are designed with practical levels of milk and performance to suit our environment and management practices. Our goal has and always will be to supply commercial bulls to the cow/calf industry and we have stayed focused on lower birth weights, adding more vigour at birth, keeping the heads polled, and offering acceptable performance with extra muscle.
Competitive by nature the Elmhirst name has been around racetracks and exhibitions since the early 1900s. In recent years Elmlodge genetics have consistently risen to the top for ourselves and our customers. From 1998 to 2007 Elmlodge was Premier Breeder at the Eastern National and National shows at the Toronto Royal Winter Fair and exhibited 9 Champions in those years. The early years of the new millennium saw impressive showings for Elmlodge in Denver with numerous class winners and back to back divisions in the competitive bull show. Since the border closed in 2003, Elmlodge genetics have continued to impress as the 2009 Denver National Champion Female was mothered by Elm-Lodge 24 Karat. With semen available on 8 of Elmlodge's herd bulls, our genetics have become internationally recognized, and Elm-Lodge Next Big Thing sold over 10,000 doses in 2008 for Semex. The cream of the calf crop is offered in our fall production sale 'Source for Success', held the third Saturday in September. The show/sale barn built in 2002 to host our first production sale sets the stage for one of Canada’s most anticipated and exciting cattle events. Hereford breeders from across 2 nations crowd into the barn where more future champions and top producers are sold than most any sale in the land.
Plan a trip to Elmlodge for a pasture tour or browse through the show pens or bull runs. Grant will welcome you to the farm, while Owen and Katie will show you all their favourites. Juanita, if she’s not preparing a sale catalogue, will show you the Simms and Mom will have a plate of goodies and a beverage waiting for you. Billy (that’s me) probably won’t be home but loves to visit and talk cows. We look forward to your visit in person but in the meantime enjoy the site and feel free to ask for more details about Elmlodge and discover why we are your 'Source for Success!'
